Corey Thompson Bags Three as Widnes Demolish Leeds to Go Top

Widnes Vikings demolished Leeds Rhinos 56-12 to storm to the top of the table on points difference. The Vikings dominated from start to finish, albeit in a game terribly disrupted by key Rhinos injuries.

Take nothing away from the stellar performance of the home side, though – Denis Betts’ men showed no let up even when the game had been put to bed.

Widnes opened the scoring in the sixth minute, as Stefan Marsh went over for the first try of the game. Quick-fire tries followed from both Setaimata Sa, his third in just two appearances, and Corey Thompson, the first of a hat-trick on his home debut.

Vikings hooker Lloyd White and centre Charly Runciman added to the advantage towards the end of the half, before Leeds centre Kallum Watkins reduced the arrears with the last play of the first half – his seventh try in his last six matches versus Widnes.

The second period followed the same script, as Corey Thompson’s second try and a Joe Mellor score saw Widnes go 40-6 up with half an hour to go.

Corey Thompson bagged his hat-trick shortly after, before youngster Connor Farell’s touchdown and Stefan Marsh’s second score diminished Rob Burrow’s late try merely a consolation in proceedings.

The game was plighted by injuries, as three of Leeds’ key players were helped to the sidelines during the game. Tom Briscoe was first to leave the field with a leg injury, before Carl Ablett followed suit – it was then Ashton Golding’s turn to join the injury list.

Despite the big Widnes win, the injured players could really have made a difference to the scoreline, had they played the full game.

The result leaves the two sides at polar opposites; Leeds are bottom on points difference going into the World Club Series, while Widnes are flying high and sitting pretty in top spot.

Widnes play Salford at the AJ Bell Stadium next Sunday, in a fixture brought forward from round 11.
