Sheffield Eagles 26-6 Halifax

Mark Aston’s Eagles came out on top in their first big test of 2016 against Halifax at the SHU Sports Park. Richard Marshall’s ‘Fax side came to South Yorkshire with confidence after a comprehensive victory against Whitehaven but they could only muster six points despite having a lot of territory and possession in the first half. At half-time, the scoreline read 0-0 as both sides cancelled each other out in defence.

However, the second half was a completely different story as the hosts scored four tries in the first 13 minutes. Rob Worrincy bagged a brace while Cory Aston and Menzie Yere also got on the scoresheet with one try apiece. Knowles converted two out of the four tries and before they knew it, ‘Fax had a lot of work to do from 20-0 down. With 15 minutes remaining, the visitors got on the board through Will Sharp. No comeback for Halifax was forthcoming, though, as a couple of attacking kicks were expertly dealt with by Sheffield full-back Quentin Laulu-Togagae before Elliot Minchella profited with four points from a Menzie Yere offload. Knowles converted the score to regain the Eagles’ 20 point advantage which stayed put for the rest of the tie.
