St Helens Claim Famous Win at Hull KR

St Helens defeated Hull KR 31-22 on  and ended an eight-year drought at Craven Park on Friday night to secure their first win on Hull KR soil since 2008.

Keiron Cunningham’s men came out on top after a dominant second half performance, but it certainly wasn’t without a fight from Hull KR.

The home side were still smarting after the sacking of Chris Chester as head coach in midweek, but it didn’t drain any hope of a victory as assistant coach Willie Poching took the helm for the first time.

St Helens led early on through full-back Shannon McDonnell, who was drafted in to replace Jack Owens after returning from injury to face his former side. Hull KR responded brilliantly though, making it 10-6 thanks to tries from Ben Cockayne and Maurice Blair.

There were two more scores before half-time, as Saints winger Tommy Makinson levelled the contest, before James Green edged his side back in front. Amidst the tries, Green and Saints’ Travis Burns were both sin-binned after a scuffle.

Matty Dawson swung the pendulum back in the away side’s favour shortly after the restart, and it stayed with them. Forwards Jon Wilkin and Atelea Vea both added individual scores to put the game further and further away from the home side.

Luke Walsh then put the game to bed with a penalty kick and a drop goal to render a late Hull KR effort through Ryan Shaw merely a consolation.

The result moves St Helens up to seventh, while Hull KR sit in tenth, with the point against Castleford their only contribution to the table so far.
