Oldham Roughyeds 21-20 Sheffield Eagles

Oldham Roughyeds backed up their win over Batley Bulldogs in round nine with a one point victory over Sheffield Eagles. Lewis Palfrey slotted over a drop goal with two minutes to go as the hosts kept up their impressive recent form. Sheffield, after their win over Bradford last weekend, will be bitterly disappointed with the loss considering the results around the division.

The first two tries of the game went the way of the Eagles as Matty Fozard and Menzie Yere both found their way over the whitewash. The steel city side held a 12-0 advantage from the 25th minute onwards but Oldham did strike back before the interval. An attacking kick from Cory Aston was poached by Liam Johnson and the centre ran 80 metres to touch down for the Roughyeds. Palfrey was successful from the tee and the Eagles’ lead was cut in half heading into the second half.

Two tries in the first eight minutes of the second half for Oldham turned the game on its head as Scott Naylor’s men hit the front. Michael Ward’s try from close range put the Roughyeds within two points of their full-time opponents and Palfrey’s conversion levelled things up. Moments later, things turned even more sour for the Eagles as Oldham hooker Kenny Hughes crossed the chalk from dummy-half. Palfrey was on target once again and his side were ahead for the first time in the match at 18-12. Just before the hour mark was reached, Fozard managed to get his second try of the game from hooker. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Aston’s conversion attempt was off and they still had two points to make up. In the final quarter, Oldham’s Palfrey kicked a penalty goal to extend their lead but, minutes later, Matt James forced his way over for four points and the game was tied. For the second successive time, Aston’s conversion was off target and it was all to play for with four minutes remaining. A knock-on early in Sheffield’s tackle count put Oldham in a great position and they took advantage of that as Palfrey kicked a drop goal to win the game for the Roughyeds.
