Oldham’s eye-catching home form continued in some style with an impressive victory over Featherstone at Bower Fold. The first half was a cagey affair and the first piece of action to write home about came with the sin-binning of Rovers’ Ian Hardman on the half-hour mark. Oldham made use of their numerical advantage as hooker Kenny Hughes forced his way over the whitewash for the only try of the half. Lewis Palfrey was successful with his conversion. After the restart, Hardman was motivated to make up for his earlier sin-binning and the three-quarter registered a 47th minute try to reduce the arrears. Debutant Jamie Foster was successful with the conversion. However, the Roughyeds regained the lead soon after as Jack Holmes profited from nifty work from dummy-half Gareth Owen. Palfrey couldn’t convert but he did eventually extend the lead through a penalty goal in the final quarter. With the clock ticking and nerves setting in, Featherstone’s Misi Taulapapa scored an important four pointer before Foster levelled matters for a second time with another conversion. The former St Helens winger then put his new side in front with around ten minutes to go but the final word went the way of the Roughyeds. Liam Johnson’s try in the dying embers of the clash proved to be the difference between the two sides come the final hooter. Another great win for Oldham while this weekend will seem like an opportunity missed for Featherstone as Batley were beaten by Leigh which meant Halifax jumped up to fourth after a victory over Workington.
