Warrington Meet Widnes in Classic Cup Derby

Warrington host Widnes at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday night in what is set to be a classic cup derby clash.

Both areas voted out in the EU referendum yesterday, but only one of these sides will be leaving the prestigious Challenge Cup competition tonight.

Wakefield secured their place in the semi-finals on Thursday, and both teams here will be going head-to-head tonight to join them.

Warrington are the favourites on paper, having already beaten their derby rivals twice in the league this season. But this is the Challenge Cup, and anything can happen.

Tony Smith’s men are also in better form than Widnes, winning three out of their last five, over Catalan, Leeds and St Helens.

Denis Betts’ boys have only managed two wins in that time, and scored no points in their last game, a scrappy 7-0 loss at home to Wigan.

Warrington half-back Kurt Gidley has tallied two tries against Widnes already this season, and will surely be one of the focal points of a Wire win on Friday.

In the massive 48-16 battering of the Vikings back in April, Kevin Penny, Joe Westerman and Stefan Ratchford all recorded two scores, in a side that is littered with potential try-scorers.

Widnes, however, have struggled to score points, only reaching 20 or more points in two of their last five, whereas Warrington have achieved that feat in three games in that time, including a 52-18 thrashing of Leeds.

When Warrington defeated Widnes at the Halliwell Jones back in March this year, the latter were without Kevin Brown, and lacked their creative spark. However, in the Select Security Stadium defeat in April, Brown failed to provide a telling influence, and was kept quiet by the Wolves defence.

Warrington Wolves 19-man squad: Atkins, Bailey, Clark, Cox, Currie, Dwyer, Evans, Gidley, Hill, Hughes, Jullien, King, Penny, Ratchford, Russell, Sandow, Westerman, Westwood, Wilde.

Widnes Vikings 19-man squad: Ah Van, Bridge, Brown, Buchanan, Cahill, J Chapelhow, T Chapelhow, Dean, Dudson, Hanbury, Heremaia, Houston, Leuluai, Manuokafoa, Mellor, Runciman, Thompson, White, Whitley
