The fake news that’s actually fake.
Newcastle have announced a lucrative partnership with FC Barcelona (Futbol Club Barcelona).
The idea was inspired by Peter’s Beattie mixing up Newcastle and Barcelona’s jerseys on live TV.
“Like everyone else, we had a good laugh about it,’ Newcastle CEO Philip Gardner said. “Then, the more we thought about it, the more we thought we could be onto something.”
The deal was sealed last week after a few days of negotiation between both both clubs, though Newcastle coach Nathan Brown was skeptical.
“Our Knights hooking up with one of the biggest soccer teams in the world? I thought Gardsy was geeing me up, but he did it,” Brown said. “At least those Barcelona guys make more sense than Wayne Bennett.”
The deal is set to make Newcastle the richest club in the NRL.
“We’ll be richer than Uncle Nick’s Roosters,’ Gardner boasted. “We’ll be unstoppable.”
As part of the deal, Newcastle will wear the FC Barcelona logo and Barcelona’s sponsors on their jersey. During the NRL off-season, Newcastle will travel to Barcelona to teach locals about rugby league, with Barcelona travelling to Newcastle later this year to run soccer clinics and play friendlies against the Newcastle Jets A-League team.
FC Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde is excited about the deal. “We don’t know much about league, but the partnership gives us a foot into Australia and allows us to steal all their best footballers.”
