Veteran half-back Mitchell Pearce has signed a two-year deal with Super League side Catalans Dragons, after finally being released from the Newcastle Knights.

The Knights made the announcement on Monday that they would let Pearce out of his contract as soon as possible, so that he could take his talents up to France.

Pearce had requested to be released from the Knights in late October, with only a year left in his contract with the side.

Newcastle were initially hesitant however, as they wanted to find a replacement for Pearce before releasing him. They have still been unsuccessful in capitalising on bringing someone in from outside the club.

In an article released by Catalans Pearce said, “I am thrilled to have an opportunity to play for a proud rugby league team like Catalans.  They have some of the most passionate fans in the sport and it is an honor to be able to represent them. I would like to thank Bernard Guasch and Steve McNamara and look forward to helping them achieve their goal of a Super League Premiership.”

During his time on the Sydney Roosters Pearce played under Catalans current coach Steve McNamara and is excited to reunite in the pursuit of a premiership.

“We are delighted and excited by the signing of Mitchell. He has had an incredible career in the NRL and having worked closely with him before I know the sheer quality and energy he will bring to our team,” McNamara said.

The 32-year-old recently entered the ‘300 club’ for the NRL earlier this year, having played 309 games throughout 15 seasons in the league.

On top of this milestone, Pearce has played 19 State of Origin matches for NSW, and an NRL premiership under his belt which he won in 2013 with the Roosters.

He will be replacing fellow Australian James Maloney in his new role, as Maloney retired at the end of the 2021 season for Catalans.
