Tom Burgess has been sent off late as Nicho Hynes’ field goal gave the Sharks a dramatic 21-20 golden point win at PointsBet Stadium.
In the game defining moment, referee Gerard Sutton dismissed Burgess after a high tackle on Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo as he flew down the sideline in the 86th minute. From the penalty and fresh set, Hynes’ first field goal attempt in golden point went between the posts to see the Sharks move to third on the ladder.
It was Andrew Fifita in a tight second half which looked like being the hero for the Sharks when he scored with twelve minutes to play. But that was cancelled out by Tevita Tatola’s try three minutes from full-time after Keaon Koloamatangi stripped the ball one-on-one on Siosifa Talakai in the lead-up.
This game was one of the best of 2022 with the game swinging momentum at different stages.
South Sydney started strongly and went out to an eight-point lead thanks to Alex Johnston’s try after twelve minutes.
As he did last week, Connor Tracey scored the Sharks’ first after twenty minutes. The game changed momentum at that point and the Sharks went into the break 14-8 ahead, thanks to a spectacular leap from Mulitalo.
The Rabbitohs just like they did in the opening twenty minutes came out of the shed looking more likely and Latrell Mitchell’s try from the boot of Cody Walker saw scores draw level.
Cam McInnes appeared to have scored with sixteen minutes to play, only to drop the ball over the line. It wouldn’t be too long before Fifita crossed before South Sydney took the game into golden point.
After a scoreless first half of golden point, Burgess made a break through midfield to give Mitchell a chance to grab victory but the attempt went wide.
Burgess went from almost hero to villain in the next play and Hynes did the job to get the Sharks home.
