Ryan Papenhuyzen has suffered a suspected fractured kneecap in Melbourne Storm’s 20-16 loss to the Canberra Raiders at AAMI Park.

Papenhuyzen was heavily involved in the Storm’s early attacking onslaught with Cameron Munster before the fullback was injured in a collision with Jack Wighton midway through the first half.

It was a case of the good, bad, and ugly in the first twenty minutes for the Storm fullback as he was sensational in attack at times, and then threw a wild pass into the arms of Sebastian Kris who opened the Raiders scoring after nine minutes.

His exit swung the game and Canberra skipped out to lead 14-6 at the break after James Schiller crossed for his first career score. Just before half-time Matt Timoko looked set to score in the same corner, but Justin Olam put an end to the play.

Jahrome Hughes got Melbourne back into the game ten minutes after half-time off the back of a quick tap after the Raiders conceded a penalty.

The sin bin of Jordan Rapana for a high shot on Marion Seve saw the Storm edge ahead with Harry Grant going over from dummy half to score with twenty to play.

However Canberra would have the last say with twenty-one year old Schiller scoring one of the tries of 2022 as he kicked in-goal for himself and scored after taking a course for the ball which saw him go outside the field of play.

With four minutes to go the Raiders looked like they had sealed victory through Xavier Savage, but replays showed he didn’t ground Wighton’s kick. In the next set Savage was the hero as he stopped Hughes from scoring down the other end.

It was a huge win for the Raiders as they joined the Roosters and Dragons on 18 points, two points outside the top eight.

For Melbourne, they now are on a three-game losing streak and will face South Sydney Rabbitohs next Saturday at Accor Stadium.
