Memory Lane: Bradford Bulls Vs Leeds Rhinos Three Easter Best Meetings

With Halifax now on the scene for the Bradford Bulls meetings at Easter, there is still a fascinating West Yorkshire derby in place.

But as this Easter is less than a day away, we thought we’d take a look back at the memory lane, as we look back at the classic Super League rivalry with Leeds Rhinos.

That said, below are three compiled best Easter fixtures between Bradford Hulls v Leeds Rhinos down the years.

1. Bradford Bulls 18 Leeds Rhinos 14 (1999)

The Bradford Bulls had just lost a Challenge Cup semi to Leeds Rhinos a few days earlier, so revenge was on their minds for this Super League clash.

Taking place on April Fool’s Day, the day before Good Friday early tries from Mike Forshaw and Henry Paul allowed the Bulls to race into a 10-2 lead.

Robbie Paul emulated his brother, with his neat dummy and run making it 18-6, and though future Bull Iestyn Harris helped launch a late comeback, Bulls still held on.

Bradford Bulls finished the year top of the regular-season table, but then when on to lose in a tense Grand Final to St Helen’s.

2. Leeds 18 Bradford 20 (2006)

Leeds Rhinos 18 v Bradford Bulls 20 meeting in 2006 was a classic topsy-turvy Super League encounter that ended with a narrow win to the Bulls at Headingley.

The game came just a week before the Bulls head coach Brian Noble’s departure for Wigan, with all the talk ahead of the game revolving around that major decision.

But in Noble’s final away game as head coach at Bradford, his players put that to one side to down their old rivals.

There was already the spice of Jamie Peacock lining up for Rhinos, mere months after captaining the Bulls to what turned out to be their final Super League crown.

He saw his new side fall behind to a Stanley Gene effort, but Gareth Ellis responded before the break, with the sides going in level at 6-6.

Rob Burrow went over for Leeds, as did former Rhinos man Harris for Bradford.

Marcus Bai put Bradford ahead before a Richie Mathers try and Burrow’s penalty looked to have won it for Leeds.

But Brett Ferres had the final say, crossing out wide to snatch victory for the visitors at the last.

3. Leeds 20 Bradford 20 (2010)

This was a game at Headingley that the Bulls should have put to bed, the Odds to BetOn were in their favour, but in the end, they were grateful not to throw it away altogether.

Chris Nero, Dave Halley and Steve Menzies gave the Bulls a rip-roaring start before future Bull Lee Smith hit back for the Rhinos.

When Nero went over for his second, it looked as if the visitors had put the game to bed.

But Brett Delaney and Sinfield pulled Leeds back into it before Smith levelled when he collected McGuire’s kick to the corner.

Sinfield couldn’t convert though, and with both sides failing to land a drop goal, they had to settle for a share of the spoils.
