MATCHDAY PREVIEW
Stephen Crichton played his last game for the Penrith Panthers nine days after his 22nd birthday.
The centre left the club with 100 appearances. In which time he scored 56 tries, won three minor premierships, and of course three consecutive premiership wins.
Stephen had achieved more by age 22 than 95% of players could even dream of. With six Origin caps and a World Cup Final with Samoa, the centre was on top of the world.
It’s why the decision to depart the Panthers and sign with the struggling Canterbury Bulldogs was so significant. For the player who had won everything in the NRL, the challenge he wanted was to rebuild one of the most historic and successful teams in our premiership.
Now as a 23-year-old, the Bulldogs captain faces his biggest challenge of the season. After nine rounds he’s brought his side to a very respectable 4-4 record with one bye. But there is no greater test in our competition than the Penrith Panthers.
The three-time premiers will make a point of their former star returning. Not to mention the likes of Matt Burton, Jaeman Salmon, Viliame Kikau, and even coach Cameron Ciraldo, who have all represented the club in the past.
Penrith play every game like it’s their last, but this one will mean more.
This is a game both Penrith and Canterbury will desperately want to win.
Bring on Friday night.
