Fresh off the back of a defeat at the hands of the Dragons last week, Manly return home to 4 Pines Park in round 5 to take on the Panthers in the hopes of getting back in the winner’s circle. While the home ground advantage will bolster Manly, this Panthers side is a different beast.
For Manly, Anthony Seibold has named an unchanged 17 from last week, which bodes well for a bounce back performance. Against the Dragons, they looked like a shadow of their former selves.
They made 15 errors and missed 36 tackles, which will be areas they’ll need to improve drastically if they are to upset the Panthers. The key for their attack will be utilising the damaging runner that is Haumole Olakau’atu. The matchup on their right edge running at Jarome Luai and Luke Garner will create opportunities if they can get Daly Cherry-Evans, Tom Trbojevic and Reuben Garrick working in sync with him, which should lead to more points.
For the Panthers, Ivan Cleary has made only one change with James Fisher-Harris returning from injury to start in the front row. Lindsay Smith drops back to the bench and Maverick Geyer drops out of the 17.
With Nathan Cleary sitting out of this contest, there will be plenty of doubters again this week as the Panthers travel to 4 Pines Park, a hard place to get a win for any visiting side. Despite missing Cleary, we saw the Panthers defensive structures remain unchanged as they made life difficult for a talented Roosters side. Dylan Edwards stepped up in his absence and Brad Schneider filled Cleary’s shoes nicely without looking out of place. With the return of James Fisher-Harris to spearhead their forward pack once again, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Panthers turn in a performance even better than last week.
