The former Wigan Warrior was granted a release from his Super League contract recently, which allowed him to move closer to his family in New Zealand.

Only last week Gelling wrote on his personal blog that it seemed that the door was shut on playing in the National Rugby League.

“As far as playing glorious game and my late attempts to join the New Zealand Warriors, it looks as though there is no room at the Inn.”, a deflated Gelling told his readers.

With his preference to play in the centres, Gelling has an impressive tryscoring record in the Super League having crossed 52 times in 114 matches.  If he can repeat that at the NRL Warriors, he will earn a longer term contract with the club.

Coach Stephen Kearney has been impressed with Gelling’s attitude to training over the last week: “We’re thrilled we’ve been able to add him to our squad. He brings size and some special skills, providing further depth and increasing competition among our outside backs.”, he told the New Zealand Warriors website.

There will still be work ahead for Gelling to make the seventeen man squad for their season opener against South Sydney at the new Perth Stadium, with Blake Ayshford, Gerard Beale and David Fusitu’a in the mix to fill the centre spots.
