5. A Memorable World Cup

With all the COVID-19 drama, it’s easy to forget there’s the Rugby League World Cup in October and November (along with the women’s and wheelchair RLWCs). The 2017 version was spectacular, with Tonga and Fiji making the semi-finals (Tonga nearly storming home against England), and Australia beating England in an enthralling final.

While previous tournaments have been weighted too heavily towards Australia, New Zealand, and England, the 2021 version is more democratic, with four pools of four teams each. There’s also exciting new teams in Greece and Jamaica: while neither are likely to win a game, they’ll sure be fun to watch before the Big Three and the Pacific Islands teams dominate the business end again.

Assuming that COVID-19 doesn’t turn everything upside down again, it should be a brilliant RLWC.
