The Brisbane Broncos have maintained their place on the top of the NRL ladder after a dominating 44-10 victory against the Manly Sea Eagles. The Manly side were disgraceful in defeat, as their terrible defence and ball control were a pivotal key to their loss.
Heading into the game, many fans expected Daly Cherry-Evans to spearhead Manly to victory after a controversial week, however the Sea Eagles halfback was outplayed by Broncos opposite Ben Hunt. Hunt was very impressive as he scored a try and played a role in others. Following the injury to Cooper Cronk, Hunt’s performance may have proved that he is the man to fill in at halfback for the Maroons, however selectors are likely to go with DCE based on experience.
The Broncos started the game with plenty of fire, and managed to cross the line through Justin Hodges only two minutes into the game. Four minutes later, Hunt swooped onto a dropped ball from Manly to extend the score to 10-0. Barnstorming winger Daniel Vidot showed why he should be included in the Brisbane side, as he scored despite having three defenders in his way.
Young gun Anthony Milford extended his run of form with a try in the 32nd minute to take the lead to 20-0. Closing in on the halftime break, Manly looked to be in all sorts of trouble, however a try from Peta Hiku gave them a bit of confidence as they headed into the sheds trailing 20-6.
The comeback looked to be on as Manly scored only three minutes into the second half, after a run and banana kick from Cherry-Evans set up a beautiful try for Brett Stewart. Unfortunately for Sea-Eagles fans, this would be the last time they would score a point for the match, as the Broncos began to pile on points. Jack Reed set Vidot up for his second try of the night, and then minutes later continued to create havoc on the Sea-Eagles right-edge, as he put in a grubber for Milford to score his second.
With only 12 minutes left of the match, Reed crossed for a well-deserved try to complete what was a man of the match performance for the English centre who has been in career-best form this season. The knife in the wound came in the 78th minute, as Jordan Kahu sliced through some terrible defence untouched.
The Broncos will be full of confidence after an easy victory, meanwhile the season looks hopeless for the Manly side, who have been pitiful both on and off the field in 2015.
