Match Review
The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have continued their winning streak at ‘The Fortress’ (Brookvale Oval) beating the West Tigers 30-20.
The Sea Eagles started off strongly with Brett Stewart scoring the first try of the night in the third minute of play. Feleti Mateo successfully converted, putting his side in the lead 6-0.
Then in the 14th minute, Daly Cherry Evans (DCE) proved his worth by winning the footrace and making a great tackle on Kevin Naiqama. Unfortantely for the Sea Eagles, West Tigers Mitchell Moses couldn’t be stopped and went over to score the first points for his team. Pat Richards continued his impressive form converting to equalise the score.
The Tigers then surprised the Sea Eagles after a brilliant try assist from James Tedesco allowing Pat Richards to score. The Tigers take the lead10-6 after Pat Richards fails to convert his own try from long-range.
The Sea Eagles were not fair behind scoring two tries five minutes between each other before half time. Steve Matai caught a high ball to level the score. And Kieran Foran went under the posts furthering the lead. Feleti Mateo was successful in converting both tries. Putting the Sea Eagles comfortably in the lead 18-10.
Controversial start to the second half as DCE looked to score after a brilliant effort. Video Referee’s deny the try deeming it was not grounded successfully. As it looked identical to the one Morris scored in Origin and Boo’s filled up the fortress as Manly fans were not happy.
The Sea Eagles are quick to respond in the 45th minute with DCE’s grubber kick finding Brett Stewart. Feleti Mateo continues his good conversion rate and furthers manly lead 24-10.
West Tigers winger Kevin Naiqama flies through the air to score a try just behind the corner post. The acrobatic move by Naiqama results in a dislocated pinky finger. Tough kick from the distance Richards is unsuccessful in converting the freakishly good try. Manly remain in the lead 24- 14.
The Sea Eagles were determined to get the job done at home as Ligi Sao goes over for a try, Mateo successfully converts and Sea Eagles remain in front 30-14.
Tigers Mitchell Moses puts the next four points on the score board after referee’s original decision is overruled due to the knock on being seen as a strip. It was the second time tonight boo’s filled the Fortress. Pat Richards put it through the goal posts, Manly leading 30-20.
The Tigers were not finished as they attempt a comeback in the 75th minute. Video Referees checked to see if it was a double movement but was confirmed a knock on by the away side.
Manly win a thrilling and close match 30-20 at home.
