Huddersfield and Salford meet at the John Smithโs Stadium in round two of Super League on Thursday. The Giants started 2017 with victory over Widnes, while Salford suffered defeat to 2016 champions Wigan. These two clubs always produce a brilliant contest – their first meeting in 2016 was settled by Danny Broughโs drop goal as Huddersfield claimed the points, while Mason Caton-Brown was the star in their last tie as the youngster scored a hat-trick to claim victory for the Red Devils.
Last time out
Huddersfield began the 2017 season with a point to prove after a disappointing last campaign saw them finish in the Qualifiers. And Rick Stoneโs men started as they will look to go on with victory on the I-pitch over Widnes โ a ground where the club struggled last year. Winger Jermaine McGillvary produced a brace of tries and was the Giantsโ key performer, however the club also had four other try-scorers โ something which will please coach Stone.
Salford lost to 2016 Grand Final winners Wigan in round one last Saturday at the AJ Bell Stadium. Despite the Red Devils conceding 26 points in the first half, a spirited performance in the second period saw them score three tries, including an effort from young hooker Kriss Brinning who joined the club from York City Nights last October.
Key battle
This round two tie could be decided by both sets of wingers โ each side possesses lots of try-scoring capacity down the flanks. For Huddersfield, Jermaine McGillvary will be aiming to add to his two efforts in round one, and Aaron Murphy will look to make a positive impact. But Salford will also be dangerous on the wing with the powerful presence of Justin Carney set to pose a threat, while young Niall Evalds could also prove worthy when the sides meet on Friday.
Prediction
As always, these two sides will produce a great contest, but Huddersfield will come out on top with their home crowd behind them. Huddersfield by 8.
