STEVE PRICE: Warrington Wolves can now start their season following first win

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price insisted that his side can start their season now, after picking up their first win of the campaign over Widnes Vikings.

They came out on top in a fiery derby on Friday night, putting defeats in the previous two rounds behind them.

Newly appointed head coach Price praised the manner in which the Wolves got off the mark.

“It was a good gutsy win,” he commented.

“They scored two tries from kicks, and the amount of field position they had on our try line and our goal-line D was fantastic, the way we stayed in the fight and showed a lot of resolve.

“I’m really proud of the guys.

“We spoke all week about attitude, and they have been going really well Widnes. They were unlucky against Cas last week.

“It was a good result for us. We hung tough and now we can start our season.

“We’re disappointed with the start of the season, but it was a great response from the boys and we can kick on from here now.”

The Warrington boss was also impressed with Stefan Ratchford’s man of the match performance, after a shaky start to the year for the fullback.

“I thought Stefan Ratchford was outstanding.

“He has rebounded from his opening two games, which is a credit to Stef, that’s why he is an international player.”

As well as getting himself on the scoresheet, Ratchford came up with a game-winning play, as he knocked the ball from Jay Chapelhow’s grasp as he was in the act of scoring a try.

“It was a big game changing play of the game,” continued Price.

“There’s a number of things he done really well, jumping into the line when we were short, and as I said that’s what test players do.”

The Wolves boss confirmed that Joe Philbin had suffered a ‘heavy concussion’ after a head clash with Hep Cahill, but claimed he was ‘pretty good’ in the sheds following the game.

Ratchford scored in between a Ryan Atkins double for Warrington as they secured their first two points of the season.

Mike Cooper spent the final eight minutes in the sin-bin for a professional foul, as the visitors soaked up the pressure to see out an 18-10 victory.

Next up for Warrington Wolves is a Friday night clash with Wigan Warriors at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
