Wigan Warriors have confirmed that winger Joe Burgess will miss the rest of the current season due to injury.

Burgess damaged his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee and now faces a lengthy recovery programme.

Wigan say he suffered the injury in his side’s win at Widnes last week after landing awkwardly following a contest for a high ball.

The 23-year old, who is in his second season back at the Warriors after a year in the NRL, is Wigan’s joint second top scorer in 2018 with eight tries.

Head coach Shaun Wane expressed his disappointment of the news to the Wigan website, saying: “I’m gutted for Joe because I know how hard he has worked to get the level he is at.

“His last three games have been his best of the year and he was playing really well. Joe is one of the best wingers in the competition and he will be back stronger than ever I’m sure.

“Joe is obviously very disappointed but is determined to get back as soon as possible.

“This is where our welfare programme really comes into its own and we will guide Joe through this period of recovery.”

Burgess is expected to be fit in time to take part in Wigan’s pre-season in preparation for the 2019 season.
