Heading into their 2017 semi-final clash with St Helens, Castleford were the heavy favourites having comfortably won the League Leaders’ Shield. However, as is common in play-off rugby, things don’t always turn out as expected.

Saints pulled out all the stops to lead by two points heading into the final moments of the match before Luke Gale kicked a nerveless penalty with the last kick in normal time to send the game into golden point extra time.

Just 16 days after having his appendix removed, Gale kicked the decisive drop goal to send Cas into their first ever Grand Final after an enthralling 23-22 victory.
