Last Season Placing: 10th (Remain in Super League after beating Hull KR 18-19 in the Million Pound Game)

Challenge Cup Placing: Knocked out in round 6 by Castleford Tigers

Recuperation Men

It goes without saying that Salford were handed a bit of a get out of jail free card after a pretty poor season in 2016. Knocked out of the Challenge Cup in the earlier stages, a heavy points deduction, and a last-ditch win in the million pound game, it took every effort for Salford to salvage something out of their season.

The Red Devils werenโ€™t short on tries being scored, but with a faltering defence adding to the list of worries at the club, it certainly wasnโ€™t a season with too many positives for the Manchester-based side. Salford will be hoping to turn things around this season. They have recruited well over the off-season, and have started their pre-season preparations strongly with three wins in three over Rochdale Hornets, Halifax and last seasonsโ€™ surprise package, Hull FC.

Key Players

Todd Carney โ€“ The 30-year old signed for the Red Devils in January after being released by Catalans Dragons back in October. The half-back is a former Australian international and still offers a lot on the field. He could be a superb signing for Salford.

Junior Saโ€™u โ€“
Top tryscorer for the Red Devils last season, the Centre crossed the whitewash 13 times, turning provider for 7 other scores and being second highest meter maker in the side. He excels in many areas of the field and is vital in the Salford squad.

Craig Kopczak โ€“ One of many senior players in the side, Kopczak was voted Playersโ€™ player and fans player of the year last time out. The prop could help if Salford aim to patch up their defensive leaks and finish higher up the ladder, he made 681 successful tackles last year.

Story of 2017

With a team littered with senior and highly experienced Rugby League players, it would be fitting and expected if Salford flip last season on its head with a solid spot inside the Top 8. If the Red Devils can escape any unwanted points deductions, the most mature of the squad can definitely get Salford back to a good position in Super League. The highlighted key players will all be 30-years old during the 2017 campaign, Salford will be hoping the older the wiser in their bid for a smoother sailing season.
