MATCH SUMMARY

Warrington put in almost complete performance to beat St Helens who lost a game in the north of England for the first time since their play-off defeat to Warrington in 2018.

Warrington got the first points of the game when Blake Austin was caught high by Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook. Ratchford converted to make it 2-0.

Warrington were on top and Matty Ashton broke through two Saints tacklers but was denied by a last ditch challenge from Jonny Lomax.

Daryl Clark seems to love playing against Saints and he scored moments later when he burrowed over from dummy half. Ratchford missed a relatively easy conversion.

Kevin Naiqama and Jack Welsby were struggling with the high ball and Warrington capitalised as Tom Lineham picked up the loose ball to score.

Austin took them three scores ahead at half time with a drop goal just before the hooter sounded.

They took the game away from Saints with a wonderful sweeping move involving Matty Ashton and Ben Murdoch-Masila resulting in a try for Josh Charnley.

Saints were the better team in the final 20 minutes as they forced multiple goal line drop outs. Naiqama was bundled in to touch and then in the final minute it looked as if Jonny Lomax had scored but he judged to have been held up meaning the game finished 19-0.

GAME HIGHLIGHT

Warrington’s defence was definitely the highlight of the game. To keep Saints scoreless was a superb effort. Wire’s line speed was excellent and the likes of Luke Thompson and Matty Lees could not get on top. Saints pushed for a try late on with Kevin Naiqama and Jonny Lomax going close but Warrington’s defence held firm.
