Young Player of the Year – Jack Welsby
The 19-year-old created his own piece of Grand Final history when he scored the match-winning try against Wigan in the dying seconds of last season’s showpiece and will want to kick on in 2021.
His ability to play at full-back, wing, centre and half-back means he should see plenty of game time this season and could look to make his mark on the international scene with England Knights this year.
Man of Steel – John Bateman
Having been so impressive for Canberra Raiders in the NRL, which included being named as the Dally M second-rower of the year in 2019, Bateman is a serious contender for this year’s Man of Steel award.
A Wigan player hasn’t won the award since Sam Tomkins’ success in 2012, and with the 27-year-old having improved his game in Australia he should be challenging the best Super League has to offer to be the first Warrior to take the top gong in almost a decade.
Top Try Scorer – Regan Grace
Another tough prediction given the number of high-quality wingers in Super League, but I fancy Welsh flyer Regan Grace to be this season’s top try-scorer.
The 24-year-old has scored 63 tries in 110 appearances for Saints since making his debut in 2017 and is likely to be in healthy competition with clubmate Tommy Makinson for the top try-scorer award.
Grand Final Winners – Wigan Warriors
Wigan will surely want to right the wrongs of last season and lift the Super League trophy for the first time since 2018.
The manner of last year’s defeat was cruel on the Warriors, and given how difficult it is for a club to win three straight Grand Finals, I fancy Adrian Lam’s side to not only win the League Leaders’ Shield, but to go one better than last season and claim their sixth Super League title.
Challenge Cup Winners – St Helens
Not many would have predicted a Leeds Vs Salford final last season, and no club has achieved the League-Cup double since the Rhinos in 2015 which is why I’m tipping St Helens to win the Challenge Cup this season.
Saints haven’t won the competition since 2008, but were losing finalists in 2019. Given the strength of their squad, the Saints should be able to prioritise winning a trophy that has alluded them for over a decade whilst still competing for the Super League title.
