Preview
The 2021 Super League season kicks off with reigning champions St Helens hosting Salford at Headingley in what should be an intriguing clash. The Red Devils are under new management and have made a host of off-season signings which makes this a must watch.
Saints will be without Morgan Knowles who is missing with a thumb injury, but have included new signings Joel Thompson, Sione Matu’utia and Agnatius Paasi in their 21-man squad.
The Red Devils have included a number of their off-season recruits in their 21-man squad with Morgan Escare, Elijah Taylor, Matty Costello, Jack Wells and Dec Patton all named. Andy Ackers and Darcy Lussick both miss out with Joe Burgess and Oliver Roberts sidelined through injury.
Prediction
It’s difficult to look past a Saints win in this one. The back-to-back Super League champions thrashed Salford is last season’s opening match and have won their last seven round one fixtures. That said, the Red Devils will be a different proposition under Richard Marshall, who was assistant coach at Saints for the past two seasons, and should push the Merseyside club all the way.
