Report

The home side got off to a the best start possible, with Brayden McGrady scoring from a long-range Dolphins attacking set. The 4-0 lead wouldn’t last long, however, with Andrew Davey slicing through on a lead line 30 metres from the Dolphins’ line and running in under the opponent’s sticks for an easy Mitchell Moses conversion.

The Eels made the most of their momentum, and all but put the game away over the following 20 minutes with tries from J’maine Hopgood down the left edge, Will Penisini down the right, and Clint Gutherson (in supports on a move down the right hand edge) to take the visitors’ lead out to 24-4.

They continued to pile on the points at the back end of the half with well worked tries from Penisini, Bailey Simonsson, and Sean Russell, which put the Eels 42-4 up going into the sheds at half-time.

The Dolphins made a concerted effort to get back into the game in the second half, and were the first on the board through Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, who raced in from his own 30 metre line for a long-range try after a break from Jamayne Isaako. Soon after, Valaynce Te Whare cut the margin down by four with a close-range effort of his own, before the Eels got one back through Gutherson.

Tabuai-Fidow added another long-range effort to the score sheet with just under 15 minutes left to play, but neither side could add to the mammoth 68-point total in the final 10 minutes: the score remained at 48-20 to the Eels with Mitch Moses a perfect eight from eight off the tee.
