Report
The Brisbane Broncos went into the match looking to maintain their unbeaten record while the Wests Tigers were desperate to open their account.
It was a rocky week for the Tigers with rumours of a rift between Tim Sheen and Benji Marshall with reports Marshall approached Mitchell Pearce without Sheens knowing. Pearce rejecting the approach to return to the NRL.
The competition leaders were ruthless in the opening forty against the bottom placed side, scoring five tries in an entertaining display to lead 28-0 at the break.
Payne Haas’ determination for his try in the 19th minute was a highlight as Jordan Riki produced a first half brace.
With 66% possession and double the amount of run metres of the Tigers, Brisbane looked well on their way to cracking the half century.
Former Eels forward Isaiah Papali’i scored three minutes after the break to get the Tigers on the scoreboard, but it was slim pickings for the visitors as the Broncos scored three further tries, including a double to Kotoni Staggs.
Reece Walsh produced an exceptional game at fullback, chiming in with three try assists, two line breaks and 165 run metres.
Haas was placed on report for a tackle on Alex Twal towards the end of the second half.
Brisbane’s victory equals their 1998 feat where they won five straight before going down to Manly in round 6 that season. That year, the Broncos went on to win the premiership.
