Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks are outright first after beating Melbourne in the top-of-the-table clash at AAMI Park.

While Nicho Hynes was out with a calf injury, Daniel Atkinson stepped up with four goals and a field goal. It was 18-18 with 10 minutes left before Atkinson kicked the field goal and Siosifa Talakai sealed the game with a try off the Storm’s short restart. Though there was more refereeing controversy: Harry Grant was sin binned in the 35th minute with “contact with the kicker” after he brushed Atkinson’s leg.

The Sharks’ win meant Penrith jumped to second, with the Panthers beating Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at BlueBet Stadium. Penrith did it reasonably comfortably, with tries to Luke Garner and Brian To’o giving them a 14-0 lead. Though the win was marred by a hamstring injury to Nathan Cleary, going off just before half-time (which will have Origin implications too). With Brad Schneider injured in the NSW Cup game, we could see a genuine test of the Panthers’ depth.

The Dolphins are fourth after beating Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at Suncorp Stadium. There was a total of nine tries – despite constant rain – with Trai Fuller’s incredible chip-and-chase try just before half-time the highlight. Though the game was marred by a mind-boggling Captain’s Challenge call to Manly: in the 61st minute (and the game tied at 22-22), Tom Trbojevic caught a bomb, but Dolphins captain Jesse Bromwich was ruled to have hit Turbo high, despite Bromwich brushing Turbo’s head with his hand.

The Sydney Roosters are fifth after beating the New Zealand Warriors at Allianz Stadium. The ground staff worked overtime after the field was covered in puddles during Saturday night’s NSW Waratahs versus ACT Brumbies Super Rugby Pacific game. The Roosters led 22-0 at half-time, with doubles to Dominic Young and Angus Crichton. The Warriors gave themselves a slight sniff at 32-18 with 10 minutes left (tries to Edward Kosi, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, and Addin Fonua-Blake) but Sam Walker closed the game out.

Brisbane rebounded – after losing Adam Reynolds last weekend – to beat Parramatta at CommBank Stadium (two tries to Deine Mariner), but they also lost Billy Walters to a wrist injury; Newcastle beat the Wests Tigers in Tamworth, building on an 8-6 half-time lead; St George-Illawarra Dragons comfortably beat South Sydney at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, with 16 points for Zac Lomax (a try, five goals, and a two-point field goal); the Titans won their second game of the season, holding off North Queensland at CBUS Super Stadium. A Brian Kelly penalty goal in the fourth minute proved to be the difference.
