The Manly Sea Eagles had a day out against the Newcastle Knights last Sunday, racking up a 38-point win (44-6). With captain Daly Cherry-Evans (along with Jake Trbojevic) out due to Origin, Jamie Humphreys slotted into halfback and scored a try on debut. Lehi Hopoate had a great game, scoring two tries and getting a miracle pass off for Tommy Talau to score. Overall, the Sea Eagles looked like a top eight side.
Chery-Evans and Trbojevic have both been named to back up after Origin. Haumole Olakau’atu has been named but has received a two-match ban for running into the melee during Origin III (he was in the squad but didn’t play). Nathan Brown has been moved from lock to prop, and Toafofoa Sipley moved to the bench. Ben Trbojevic returns to the bench from concussion. Taniela Paseka has been named as a reserve after being out with a thumb injury.
The Titans had a good win over the Eels, making it their third win on the trot, racing out to an 18-nil lead with tries to Alofiana Khan-Pereira (two) and Phillip Sami. To their credit, the Eels fought back to get within eight points (24-16), but it wasn’t to be.
Keano Kini has been named at fullback, but like last week, he may be swapped out for AJ Brimson, who has been named 18th Man. Moeaki Fotuaika has been named to back up from Origin III. Josiah Pahulu moves from the front row to the bench.
The matchup between former teammates Cherry-Evens and Keiran Foran is mouthwatering. Cherry-Evans will not have an Origin hangover and will want to lead his side to the finals, where, on their day, they can be a force. Foran still has some go in him and will want to win over his former club.
The battle of the outside backs is an intriguing one. Saab and Hopoate know how to sniff out a try, with Talau also chiming in. Khan-Perira can score from anywhere on the field and Sami seems to have found a home in the centres at the Titans. With plenty of points in both sides, we will see whose defence stands up on game day.
Out of 11 matches played between these two teams, the Titans have a winning record at 4 Pines Park – winning six and scoring 254 points.
