Every so often an NRL game comes along that has a bit of a feeling about it. It’s not always the biggest clash with the best players, or even a local derby. Just one of those games that you look at at the start of the week and think: “Ooh – I think I might watch that”.
This is one of those games. On one hand you have a Brisbane Broncos side whose recent success has been fundamentally built on free-flowing attack. Players like Reece Walsh, Ezra Mam, and Selwyn Cobbo have defined this side’s resurgance – and will continue to define it for a long time yet. Don’t get me wrong, they’re extremely capable defenders. But if you ask this side whether they prefer a try-athon or a physical grind, that’s only going one way.
Then on the other hand, you have Ricky Stuart’s Raiders. A side who, while they’ve found attacking form this season, are notorious for dragging teams into an arm wrestle and having games decided by narrow margins. Without even having started preparing for this game, the Raiders come in with an ethos that is designed to limit teams like Brisbane. A way they can beat any team in the competition by dragging them down to their level.
So you’ve got two opposite rugby league approaches butting heads on Saturday night. On face value, it’s hard to look past the Broncos at home. But with 17 errors last week against the Dolphins, and field position so hard to earn against the Raiders, there’s a real chance here that Canberra make it two wins in two years against the Broncos at Suncorp.
