Wigan Warriors 0-1 Leigh Leopards (21,748 Attendance)

Willie Isa left Wigan for Chelsea and seemingly took all the points with him, instead leaving title favourites Wigan Warriors to fight out a 0-1 Golden Point defeat to Leigh; one for the record books. The Leopards ended a 42-year drought (16-game) away at Wigan, outbattling the Quadruple winners in a football score under the watchful eyes of pre-match MC Michael Buffer and more pertinently – Mason Mount.

Hull KR 19-18 Castleford Tigers (11,000)

A record Round 1 attendance of 21,748 were ready to rumble at The Brick Community Stadium, after which attention turned to the previous record holders Hull KR on Friday night. They too battled it out in extra time and reigning Man Of Steel Mikey Lewis proved the difference with an ice-cold golden point drop goal from 25 metres out after Tex Hoy missed a tough penalty to put the impressive Tigers ahead in the 78th minute.

Catalans Dragons 4-24 Hull FC (9,273)

Hull FC produced a shock upset away at the Stade Gilbert Brutus with Cade Cust grabbing an important brace for the Airlie Birds, but it was their impressive defence that was the biggest takeaway from their Round 1 performance. An underwhelming start for the Catalans Dragons.

Leeds Rhinos 12-14 Wakefield Trinity (15,364)

Leeds Rhinos struggled to back up their 92-0 Challenge Cup victory over West Warriors the week prior and were beaten comprehensively by underdogs Wakefield Trinity. A late try when the game was gone meant Leeds were flattered by the two-point margin at the final hooter, with the Rhinosโ€™ attack faltering in line with the general theme of conservative play through the league. Their issues, though, were merely exacerbated by sloppy finishing and Wakefield took their opportunities over a nine-minute period half way through the first half – which proved the ultimate difference between the two sides.

St Helens 82-0 Salford Red Devils (12,218)

A young Salford Red Devils side were essentially lambs led to slaughter by Paul Rowley, who appeared to try the hand of the RFL in the lead up to the game to no avail. A very messy situation. Nevertheless, the Saints did as anticipated and imposed an 82-point margin with Tristan Sailor starring live on the BBC, but the record margin between the two sides was one of the only negative takeaways with the league clearly trying to promote the product on the opening week.

Huddersfield Giants 12-20 Warrington Wolves (5,871)

The Burgess derby brought the week to a close and Sam took the spoils over Tom in another low scoring contest with Warrington Wolves making territorial dominance eventually pay over a resilient Huddersfield Giants defensive performance.
