In our weekly round up of Super League news, there are a lot of contracts being extended as a manager and two players re-sign with their clubs.
‘Super’ Bennie Westwood signs on for another year with Wire
Warrington Wolves’ stalwart, Ben Westwood, has re-signed with Warrington for another season, stretching his tally of playing years to 18. The 37-year-old had one of his best seasons during 2018, not missing many and reaching 500 club appearances when Warrington played away at Wigan in July. Westwood has scored 128 tries over his time with the Wire, since 2002.
Chris Chester signs contract extension as Trinity Head Coach
Wakefield boss, Chris Chester signs a contract extension which will see him stay as the Head Coach at Belle Vue until at least, 2021. Chester has been a revelation since joining Wakefield, getting them back to being a respectable side and reaching the top 8 in the last two consecutive seasons. He was named as Wakefield Head Coach back in March 2016, since then the Trinity have come on leaps & bounds and their fans will be as excited as the man himself is, to see Chris Chester be with Wakefield for a further three years.
Broncos fail to keep a hold on Sammut
London Broncos’ star-man, Jarrod Sammut is granted his leave from London, as he hopes to sign for a bigger & better club. The former Workington Town man signed for London back in, 2015 on a loan deal and then signed permanently in 2017. Since his arrival down in Ealing, he has been the go to man for the London side, seeing their much deserved promotion after beating the Toronto Wolfpack in the Million Pound game. He scored 45 tries between 2017-18. London said to their fans that they did everything they could to keep him but he wanted to be elsewhere and London just couldn’t keep a hold of him.
Joel Tomkins stays on with Rovers
Former Wigan man, Joel Tomkins stays on with Hull Kingston Rovers, signing a three-year-deal, seeing him stay at the KCOM Lightstream until 2021. Tomkins, brother of Logan & Sam, was told to leave Wigan after the incident during the season in 2018 which involved him and one of his brothers. Since signing for Hull KR, he has played 9 times, scoring just two tries. The Warrington born man will be looking forward to beginning a full season at Hull KR.
Super League Rule changes
The RFL have bought in some new rules, the main one being something the NRL use, Golden point extra-time. If a game happens to end a draw, there will be an additional set of minutes which allows teams to compete further in order for one of them to win the game. As soon as one of the teams, get any sort of point, the game will immediately end meaning the particular team will win. The Super League have introduced this to not only match the Australian league, but to better our own game. This will make certain games more effective, if they are to end as draws.
