An historic afternoon awaits the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Sunday as they celebrate Jared Waerea-Hargreavesโ 300th club game when they host the Warriors. Waerea-Hargreaves will become the fourth person to play 300 games for the foundation club, giving the Roosters more 300-gamers than any other club.
After a hot-and-cold start to the year, the Roosters have turned it on in the past two weeks, scoring 100 points in victories over the Dragons (60-18) and Broncos (40-18) off the back of the strong form from the likes of Sam Walker, Angus Crichton, and Connor Watson, among others. The promise shown by the Warriors in 2023 and into the pre-season has slowly faded away and they now stare down the barrel of four consecutive losses, having followed a draw against Manly with losses to St George Illawarra, Gold Coast, and Newcastle. Of the five games theyโve lost this season, three have come after they were in positions to win.
With the returns of Waerea-Hargreaves, Daniel Tupou, and Victor Radley from injury, and Spencer Leniu from suspension, the Roosters have their strongest 17 available for the first time since the 2019 Grand Final. As a result of these returns, Connor Watson and Naufahu Whyte drop back to the bench, while Junior Pauga, Siua Wong, Egan Butcher, and Sitili Tupouniua are named among the reserves.
Andrew Webster hasnโt hit the panic button yet, but has been forced into a couple of changes to the side that lost in Newcastle last weekend. Kurt Capewell is out with a calf injury, with Mitch Barnett moving from the middle to the edge and Bunty Afoa named to start at prop. Jazz Tevaga will return from the bench after a month out with a hamstring injury.
Having recorded back-to-back wins for the first time in 2024 last weekend, the Roosters will be aiming to continue the momentum against a Warriors side that they’ve dominated in recent years, winning their past seven matches dating back to 2018. Results between the two sides have been split evenly throughout history, with the Roosters winning 23 matches to the Warriors 22, along with a draw. The Warriors only lost back-to-back matches at the original Sydney Football Stadium once, between 1996 and 1998.
The Roosters have averaged over 27,000 spectators at each Allianz Stadium home game in 2024. A big match in a good timeslot against an opponent with plenty of fans should see them go close to that mark again. Celebrating their popular front rower, they should be up and ready to get the job done.
