The Hornby Panthers took the lead of the Bartender NZ CRL Premiership after outlasting their rivals. Skipper Sincere Harraway played a key role in the game, recording two out of the three tries by the Panthers. The South Island specialist half and hooker has been starring from the fullback position in recent weeks and becoming an integral part of the squad.

In the meantime, Northern Bulldogs and Riccarton Knights chalked their second with for their 2021 campaign, downing the fourth-placed Haswell Hornets and the third-placed Celebration Lions. Riccarton was eight points behind the Lions by halftime, but they managed to overcome the deficit in the second half to claim a 20-14 win. During the game, center Jahrome Clark recorded two tries for Riccarton, while Kasi Leka backed his four-try haul by recording a double for the Lions.

The Bulldogs recorded a 28-18 victory after taking a 10-8 lead against Haswell by halftime. Veteran player Izic Placid recorded three tries to help the Frank Endacott-trained squad thwart the Hornets, who started their 2021 campaign strongly under coach Walter Wilson.

The Eastern Eagles also celebrated their 46-18 victory over the Papanui Tigers. Pio Loane crossed four times while the Eagles capitalized on their 16-point halftime lead, making the Tigers the only team that hasn’t recorded a win in the competition.

The CRL Women Premiership started with the Mother’s Day double the following Sunday at the Nga Puna. For this competition, the defending champions Sydenham Swans outwitted Linwood Keas by beating them 26-22, while last year’s losers Woolston Rams recorded a 36-12 win against the Eastern Eagles.
