Hull KR winger Ryan Shaw could be out for the rest of the 2018 campaign with a knee injury.
He suffered the injury in a tackle during last Sunday’s 52-22 victory against Salford Red Devils, which retained their slim hopes of a top eight finish.
Shaw is the third-highest points scorer in Super League this season, contributing 156 points with 11 tries and 56 goals.
Head coach Tim Sheens confirmed that he is set for a length spell on the sidelines, and could require surgery.
“There’s a bit more damage to it than we initially thought and the scans were suggesting a lateral ligament injury with a six to eight-week timeframe for recovery.
“However, we’ve since consulted with a specialist and he’s suggested that Ryan could potentially require surgery.
“There’s a chance he might be able to just rehab the injury in which case we’ll have him back during the Eights, but if he does have to go in for surgery then that’ll be the end of his season.
“Either way, it’s really disappointing for Ryan. He had a long spell out with his ACL before I arrived at the club, but since I’ve been here he’s been virtually an ever present, only not playing when I’ve decided to give him a rest.
“He’s handled the frustration of being injured before but it’s a blow for him and us nonetheless.”
Rovers had last week confirmed the signing of former Australian international half-back Todd Carney until the end of the season.
