Wakefield Trinity bounce back to form after a 32-12 away win against Hull FC., ending Hull’s three match unbeaten run.
MATCH DETAILS
Wakefield came into the game off the back of a defeat to Hull KR and started the better against Hull FC. Wakefield had the majority of possession without breaking the Hull line, until Danny Houghton’s missed tackle allowed Tom Johnstone to scorched away and his inside ball to Ryan Hampshire opened the scoring after twenty-seven minutes.
Hull then went down to 12 men, after Albert Kelly was shown a yellow card for a high shot and Trinity converted the resulting penalty to give them an eight point lead with half an hour gone.
Wakefield scored again thanks to Bill Tupou two minutes later as they punished Hull. An injury to Tom Johnstone allowed Hull to regroup.
Not long before half time a delicate kick by Marc Sneyd was picked up by Hampshire underneath his own posts, however Houghton stole the ball and grounded.
The final play of the half saw Hull place a kick in behind the defensive line and Bureta Faraimo was on hand to dive onto it before crossing the dead ball line. Wakefield led 14-12 at the interval.
Trinity captain Danny Kirmond was the next into the sin bin. The Wakefield number 12 hit Sneyd late after the kick and Liam Moore showed him the yellow, but Hull were unable to capitalise. Wakefield spreading move was ended in the corner by Tupou.
The Black and White’s were getting frustrated and a grubber kick from Sneyd trickled over the line before Sneyd kick it into the stand, Moore showed another yellow card. Hull went down to 12 for a second time, however they were unable to score this time.
Wakefield crossed twice more. First a bulldozing run by Pauli Pauli and then Reece Lyne had wrapped the game up at 32-12.
The final action of the match saw Pauli being the fourth player sent to the sin bin. This was for a high shot. With 33 seconds on the clock Trinity held firm and kept Hull pointless in the second half.
FOUR POINTERS
Johnstone injury
There will be concern for Chris Chester after star winger Tom Johnstone was stretchered off in the first half. The England international looked to have suffered a serious injury and was in a lot of pain, as he punched the ground before being treated. He will be a big miss for Wakefield.
Not a Malicious Match
It is rather unusual to see four players sin binned in one match for four separate offences, however the game never looked like boiling over. Sneyd clearly was frustrated, however the other three incidents were all missed timed and it is doubtful they will have a case to answer for their discipline.
Promising Youngster
Jez Litten has been in and around the Hull side for the past year and could turn into a gem for the Black and White’s. Litten’s movement at the play the ball injects some pace into the Hull attack. The hooker was recognised for this and received the home man of the match award. A good way to cap off the week in which he turned 21.
Strong Defence
Wakefield have been known as a side who score a lot of points, however they also concede a fair amount. However, apart from a couple of blips, Trinity has restricted their opposition to 12 points or less in three of their opening six matches. This will be strongly tested next week as they host the Warrington Wolves.
