Just three rounds to go in the Intrust Super Cup regular season, and although there are important games everywhere in Intrust Super Cup Round 22, none are as big as the top of the table clash in Townsville between Redcliffe Dolphins and the Blackhawks. It will go a long way to sorting out the minor premiership, and could well be a late season Grand Final preview.

Further down the ladder there’s still the top 6 to decide, and the biggest clash in that region is the one between the Easts Tigers and the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Plenty more to look forward to for Intrust Super Cup Round 22, for a rare occasion there are more games on Sunday than Saturday, and all of it gets a quick preview below.

TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH IN TOWNSVILLE

Townsville and Redcliffe meet at Jack Manski Oval on Saturday as teams one and two on the ladder, and depending on the result it could open up the race for the minor premiership, or put it almost out of reach.

The sides are separated by just one point after Townsville were beaten by Norths in the TV Game last weekend, and Redcliffe left it late to draw with the last placed Mackay Cutters.

A win for Townsville will give them the prime position to claim the minor premiership, as they can seal it the next week against the other side who are challenging for first – Burleigh Bears. Their massive for and against worth another point in the battle for first.

If the Dolphins come from Townsville with the two points, it will certainly set the last two rounds up nicely, with that previously mentioned Townsville v Burleigh coming next weekend.

As ever, the Blackhawks look the strongest paper, with many an ex NRL player, but Redcliffe aren’t second by accident, and this should be a great game to watch. Pity it isn’t the TV Game.

Burleigh head to Davies Park to face a Magpies side on a terrible losing run, but who played well enough against the Hunters last Sunday, Burleigh got the job done at home to Wynnum to stay within two points of Townsville.

HOW THEY STAND

TOWNSVILLE 1st 30pts +231
REDCLIFFE 2nd 29pts +177
BURLEIGH 3rd 28pts +112

TOP SIX BATTLE CONTINUES

The big game in the chase for the top six is the Easts Tigers against the Sunshine Coast Falcons. The Tigers are on a super run of six wins in seven games, the Falcons loss to Ipswich last weekend ended a three game streak.

Easts’ charge has seen them climb up to fifth position, and are still a good chance to get into fourth with their healthy for and against, and possibly above and secure a home final in week one of the final, if they win. A loss could see them overtaken by two teams and let another two draw level. One of those is the Falcons.

There’s a lot to like about the clash between the two sides that Falcons coach Craig Ingebrigtsen has been in charge of, with loads of exciting talent, NRL or not, in both sides.

Sixth placed PNG Hunters head to Piggabeen to face a team they didn’t beat on either occasion in 2017, despite their minor premiership and grand final win. Tweed Heads could really do with a win as they slide further down the ladder. It is the third worst attack in the competition against the second worst defense.

Northern Pride can make it a clean sweep of the Foley Shield games between themselves, Townsville and Mackay this weekend if they beat the Cutters, and cement their place in the top six. Mackay almost won at Dolphin Oval last weekend before settling for a draw, which will hopefully give them confidence in the battle to avoid the spoon.

Norths Devils did extremely well against Townsville at home last weekend causing an upset against the table toppers. They are equal on points as fifth and sixth, but their for and against is in the negative, hurting their top six chances. They should take advantage of playing Wynnum at home where victories have been so hard to come for the Seagulls.

Ipswich Jets are the last tem realistically in the hunt for finals football, and we all get to see their progress this weekend as they host the Capras in the TV game on Saturday afternoon. Ipswich did well to get past the Falcons last start, the Capras will be looking over their shoulders at last placed Mackay if they lose.
