After a relaxing Easter weekend, it is time to work off all the Easter chocolate with a big Intrust Super Cup Round 5.
The weekend starts off with the TV clash between two of the bottom three. Surprisingly one of those teams is the Townsville Blackhawks as they welcome the win-less Tweed Heads Seagulls. The rounds ends with a classic Sunday afternoon clash between regular top 6 hopefuls Easts and Redcliffe who always offer up a great contest.
In between there’s plenty of quality footy on offer, and questions to be answered.
Are Burleigh Bears able to maintain their unbeaten start to the year in the NRL curtain raiser to be played in Gladstone?
Can the stingiest defence in the competition (Northern Pride) withstand the onslaught of the attacking Jets and maintain their great start to 2018?
Will the PNG Hunters rediscover their away form without Stargroth Amean and Willie Minoga?
Is a Seagull better than a Magpie?

A nice battle of the Woolf brothers this weekend in Townsville – Kristian in charge of Townsville and Ben leading Tweed Heads. Not much joy for either brother in 2018 so far. Townsville belted Mackay in Round 1, but haven’t won since. Tweed Heads haven’t won at all, but are not necessarily playing as bad as their W-L record suggests. Not a great record against Townsville though.

The Northern Pride have been one of the surprises of the early rounds of the Intrust Super Cup, and their Premierships odds continue to be slashed accordingly. But before getting too excited, their three wins from the first four rounds have come at home against admittedly strong opposition like Townsville and PNG Hunters, so the Pride need to prove they can do it away from home, they lost their round 1 clash in Brisbane. Ipswich weren’t able to get past the Capras in Rockhampton last weekend, stopping their momentum of wins over Townsville and Easts.

Norths suffered their first loss last weekend at the hands of Wynnum, but will fancy their chances against the Hunters after defeating them in Port Moresby last year against a much stronger Hunters side. The Hunters arrive for their first game of the season in Brisbane minus two of their big stars. Fullback Stargroth Amean has played his last game for the PNG side as he has retired to concentrate on furthering his studies. Grand Final hero Willie Minoga is injured. That gives the lively Adex Wera an extended shot at fullback, and Junior Rau to become the newest Hunter.

A clash between two of the four bottom sides, surprisingly last year’s beaten Grand Finalists Sunshine Coast is down this low so early in the season. Lachlan Coote is named again at fullback despite the Cowboys looking like they could do with him at the back, who knows whether he will play. The Falcons have their own NRL experience with Ryley Jacks at halfback, but is up against a very capable duo of Hynes and Laybutt for the Cutters. The very experienced Khan Ahwang makes an appearance at another ISC club, named at fullback for the Sunshine Coast.

Gladstone gets their first taste of Intrust Super Cup this weekend, as a curtain raiser for the Titans v Sea Eagles NRL clash, makes sense as both of these clubs are Titans affiliated. Burleigh are now the only unbeaten team in the competition, and their form is ominous for the rest of the teams at the moment. Central got the better of the Bears in early 2017, but a repeat upset looks quite unlikely given Burleigh’s form so far this season, despite their excellent win over Ipswich last weekend.

Two teams that regularly compete for the top 6 places meet on Sunday, and as ever it should be a clash worth making the effort to get to Suzuki Stadium in the traditional Sunday afternoon slot. Both teams on a 2-2 record, and both recorded very good wins last start. The Tigers 38-8 win over the Falcons was particularly impressive in the TV game. More of the same from the Tigers on Sunday will see it being very hard for Redcliffe to take the two points. Games went with the home teams last season, but there has been much change since.

So on paper there looks nothing between them. The one advantage for either side is the two proven try scorers on either wing for Wynnum – Delouise Hoeterย and Daniel Ogden.
