After comfortably topping the Super League table in 2017, Castleford Tigers were the heavy favourites to defeat St Helens when the two sides met in a winner takes all semi-final. However, Saints pulled out all the stops to lead by two points heading into the final minute of normal time. Gale kicked a nerveless penalty with the final kick of the match to send the game into golden point extra-time, the first play-off game to ever go beyond 80 minutes. Then, just 16 days after having his appendix removed, Gale would kick the decisive drop goal to send Cas into their first ever Grand Final after a thrilling 23-22 victory at The Jungle.
