With Super League celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, let’s take a look at ten of the best moments the competition has given to us since Paris Saint-Germain’s clash with Sheffield Eagles back in March 1996. Here are the moments we’ve picked out from a quarter of a century of Super League action.
Where it all started (1996)
There’s no better place to start than with Super League’s inaugural match played in the unfamiliar setting of Stade Sebastien Charlety Stadium, Paris, on March 29th 1996. The newly-formed Paris Saint-Germain secured a thrilling 30-24 victory against the Sheffield Eagles with Frederic Banquet going over for the first ever try in the competition.
However, this would prove to be just one of three wins the French side would manage in their debut Super League season before folding at the end of the following season. That said, Paris’ contribution to Super League will never be forgotten.
The Parisians also led the way for further expansion teams in Super League with the likes of London Broncos, Catalans Dragons and Toronto Wolfpack all proving that if it’s done right, expansion teams can more than hold their own in the competition.
