5. A Memorable World Cup
With all the COVID-19 drama, itโs easy to forget thereโs the Rugby League World Cup in October and November (along with the womenโs and wheelchair RLWCs). The 2017 version was spectacular, with Tonga and Fiji making the semi-finals (Tonga nearly storming home against England), and Australia beating England in an enthralling final.
While previous tournaments have been weighted too heavily towards Australia, New Zealand, and England, the 2021 version is more democratic, with four pools of four teams each. Thereโs also exciting new teams in Greece and Jamaica: while neither are likely to win a game, theyโll sure be fun to watch before the Big Three and the Pacific Islands teams dominate the business end again.
Assuming that COVID-19 doesn’t turn everything upside down again, it should be a brilliant RLWC.
