Each week during the Intrust Super Cup, Matt Crowhurst will give his verdict on the main points to come out of the competition.

Four Pointers – Round 9

COACH UNDER PRESSURE TO KEEP JOB

The coaching merry-go-round may soon claim its first casualty of 2018 with one poorly performing club under pressure to find a new coach. The side’s current coach has been told not to reapply for the role.

SUPERCOACH SCOUT

NRL coaches and scouts are an uncommon sight at ISC games and Wayne Bennett was at Davies Park on Sunday to watch the Magpies and Tigers dance. Was he on the look out for a replacement for injured young forward Payne Haas? We believe he had a particular blonde mountain of a man in his sights. Perhaps someone warned the young lad, because he had a Wow of a game. Also, congratulations to his Magpies team-mate who has signed a contract with South Sydney and will be part if their system in 2019.

BEST TEAM ON PAPER?

“We’ve got the best team on paper”. So an ISC player told me over the weekend, and he may be right. The problem for the young man in question is that you do not win games on paper, you win them between the white lines and his team has had a very disappointing start to the season. They will need to turn things around quickly if they are to keep those premiership hopes alive.

CUTTERS CUT DEVILS GRASS

This competition can still throw up an upset. Congratulations to the Mackay Cutters on their upset defeat of the high-flying Norths Devils over the weekend. Stephen Sheppard has his men primed for a big game at Bishop Park on Sunday and they comfortably dismantled the Devils. You can be sure no one will be underestimating the Cutters for the rest of 2018 after this performance. Devils coach Rohan Smith probably won’t be heart-broken, if you are going to drop a game now is the time to do it.
