In a huge setback for the Broncos and Maroons, Matt Gillett has been ruled out for up to three months with a fractured neck.

It’s been reported that Gillett suffered the initial damage on the opening night of the season when Brisbane Broncos went down to St George-Illawarra Dragons at Jubilee Oval.

A specialist this week confirmed the worse for the Australian International, the only positive being that surgery will not be required.

This is a blow for the wounded Broncos who have crossed the ditch to face the New Zealand Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.ย  Gillett is one of the most consistent forwards in their squad and most importantly an eighty minute player.

Queensland Maroons also lose a star performer having secured a starting spot in the second row at the expense of Aidan Guerra since the 2016 Origin series.

Former Cronulla Sharkย Sam Tagataese has travelled to New Zealand with the Broncos squad.ย  Tagataese has been in outstanding form for Norths Devils in the Intrust Super Cup.

The Broncos have other injury problems with Jack Bird training in the halves in the event Kodi Nikorima doesn’t recover from a corked thigh in time for Saturday’s clash, and Josh McGuire struggling with a back problem during the week.

New Zealand Warriors will go in as favourites to remain undefeated after six rounds of this year’s NRL premiership.
