Fans deserve better rules around player and coach transfers

Over the years an ugly trend has come into the game, where players have decided their futures well in advance of their current contract. Angus Crichton and Tyrone Peachey are prime examples of making the switch early into the final year of their contract. It threatened to creep into the coaching ranks until sanity prevailed and the swap was done between South Sydney (Wayne Bennett) and Brisbane (Anthony Seibold).

Increasingly fans are getting frustrated that a membership renewal in September doesn’t guarantee they will see their star player remain at the club by March. You can’t even buy wall calendars for the new year because featured players have moved clubs.

Is it time to take a sensible approach and give supporters more clarity, by introducing a similar trade period to the AFL, and make it a significant event in the post-season calendar?
