Super League Round 17 Review
Castleford have opened up a four point lead at the top of the table after a spirited comeback against St Helens, Salford failed to close the Tigers down as they took on Wakefield at the weekend, but they still sit comfortably in second. However, Leeds and Wakefield are not far behind and could easily bridge the gap with wins in the next round. The table is moving rapidly as we the last few rounds of the regular season beckon.
FRIDAY
LEEDS RHINOS 22-14 LEIGH CENTURIONS
Leeds held on for an important two points in tough conditions to beat Leigh and dump the Centurions at the bottom of the ladder.
The Rhinos started will with Adam Cuthbertson and Tom Briscoe going over early on, putting Leeds in control early on. This was short lived however as Matty Dawson grabbed a try for the visitors. Joel Moon managed to find a way over in response, but Dawson was on hand again to reduce the deficit before the break. Leeds had the narrow 14-10 lead at the break.
It was Cuthbertson who was on hand for Leeds again after the restart, going over after a series of penalties against Leigh.
Paterson got a late consolation for Leigh but it wasn’t enough to trouble Leeds who move positively towards the summit.
Only disciplinary matters from the match are a Caution for Antonia Maria for contact with the match official in the 33rd minute.
SATURDAY
HULL FC 39-26 WIGAN WARRIORS
Wigan fell to a third straight defeat on the road at Hull, kicking being the difference between the sides. Hull put on a good first half display to set the tone for the match, with Wigan working well in the second half, although it was not quite enough.

Liam Farrell receives the only charge from the disciplinary panel for verbal abuse towards the match official and will miss 1-2 matches.
SUNDAY
CASTLEFORD TIGERS 16-12 ST HELENS
The Tigers continued to show their true colours as they fought hard to earn the two points against St Helens, to give them breathing space at the top of the table. Saints started the better of the two sides but Castleford put in another good performance to pull it back and steal the win.

SALFORD RED DEVILS 24-34 WAKEFIELD TRINITY
Wakefield followed up their emphatic win over Wigan on Bank Holiday Monday by ending Salford’s seven match winning run at the AJ Bell Stadium.
Wakefield raced to a 16-0 lead as ex-Salford winger Mason Caton-Brown opened the scoring. Reece Lyne followed this up with a brace as Trinity looked to be in control. However, the tables soon turned as a Jake Bibby double each side of Craig Kopczak’s effort put Salford into the lead.
Mason Caton-Brown added his second in the 65th minute before Lama Tasi responded for Salford, in what was shaping up for a grandstand finish. Caton-Brown completed his hat-trick to send Wakefield on their way, before James Batchelor secured the points with a 79th minute effort.

WIDNES VIKINGS 26-6 CATALANS DRAGONS
Widnes showed great determination as they registered just their fourth victory of the season, one that took them off the foot of the table as they push to break into the top 8 in time for the end of the regular season. Catalans never really got a foothold in the game and Widnes made sure of it.

HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS 44-4 WARRINGTON WOLVES
It was a fairly quiet first half at the John Smith’s Stadium, Ollie Roberts crashed over 6 minutes to take the Giants 6-0 up, and it wasn’t until the 27th minute until more points were registered. Jermaine McGillvary went over, before Aaron Murphy extended Huddersfield’s lead to 14-0 after two failed conversions.
Clough went over early in the second half to make it 20-0 to Huddersfield before Jordan Turner extended that lead further. Tom Lineham got Warrington’s only score of the game on 54 minutes, but Mamo, McGillvary and Murphy wrapped up the points for the home side in a confident performance from the Yorkshire side.
