The Forward Pass: What’s Channel Nine’s Bold Origin Idea?

NSW will name their 2018 Origin coach…through reality TV.

With nobody interested in replacing Laurie Daley, Channel Nine agreed to broadcast Who Wants to Coach the NSW Blues? over summer.

Nine CEO Hugh Marks explained the concept, “everyone knows being Blues coach is a career killer, so we may as well throw it open to the punters. It’s perfect for all those Supercoach gurus and average fans who don’t mind humiliation.”

Hosted by Scott Cam and Delta Goodrem and airing Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights from October, contestants will undergo a number of reality show cliches, including renovating a house in suburban Sydney, cooking a three-course meal in 15 minutes, winning a talent show and completing a number of disgusting survival challenges in rural NSW. The judging panel – Ray Warren, Brad Fittler, Andrew Johns and Phil Gould – will eliminate contestants every Sunday night until one is left.

“We know Queensland will keep winning anyway, so why bother picking a qualified coach? Whoever survives all these silly challenges will have enough resilience – or stupidity – to be a smiling Jim Hacker-style puppet while the media tears NSW apart after another series loss,” said Marks. “We’ll plug the crap out of it on our finals footy coverage and The Footy Show so it’ll be a ratings winner.”

Potential contestants can apply on the Wide World of Sports Facebook page.
