Warrington Wolves are reportedly close to securing a deal to bring Canberra Raiders half-back Blake Austin to Super League for the 2019 season.

The Wolves have been on the lookout for a new number seven after announcing that former Gold Coast star Tyrone Roberts had been granted an early release from his contract, allowing him to go back to Australia at the end of the campaign.

It had been thought that former St Helens man Kyle Eastmond was set to take the vacated position, but a deal for the free agent appears to have stalled in recent weeks.

Austin has made over 100 NRL appearances for Penrith, Wests Tigers and Canberra, and would be a like-for-like replacement for the outgoing Roberts, although the 27-year old can also fill in at full-back, centre and hooker.

The deal would be a huge coup for the Wolves, with Austin likely to be the new marquee player at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Austin has been dropped to the Raiders bench for this weekend’s clash against the Canterbury Bulldogs, sparking rumours that an announcement of any potential move could be announced in the coming days.
