BETFRED LEAGUE 1 | Whitehaven issue rallying cry to supporters

Whitehaven RLFC’s board of directors have issued a rallying cry to supporters in the wake of the recent financial issues plaguing the club.

The club stated last month that they needed donations from supporters and local businesses if they were to see themselves through to the end of the 2018 campaign, and former players, including former ex-Warrington forward, Paul Wood, offered to play for free for the club to ease their financial woes.

The club say that they are still talking with local businesses to generate the funds needed to see themselves through the campaign, but admitted that turnstile revenue on matchday’s had been lower than they had anticipated.

Nevertheless, they claimed that they are still working hard to generate additional money in the hope of providing the club with a long-term future.

They also stated that they needed the fans to help the cause by attending games between now and the end of the season, in a bid to improve game day ticket sales.

A statement read: “The board feel it is imperative to engage with shareholders and fans prior to the next home game to try and ease the current apathy which is believed to have played a part in the poor attendances received during the past 2 games.

“To not break the one thousand mark, of home fans, against Bradford was disappointing given the general good feeling that was around the club at that time, however that was not nearly as disappointing as there being less than 600 of those fans return for another big game, this time against Keighley, Another club who are suffering from financial difficulties at present.

“The effort of the fans in raising what they did during the early stages of the appeal was humbling and is to be commended however, some pledges are still outstanding, the club needs fans to continue this effort through the turnstiles.

“The club will continue over the next couple of weeks to try and increase this total through targeting businesses in the local area and further afield. Some headway has been made on this and the club will release all details once things are finalised.”
