REPORT | Intrust Super Cup Finalists confirmed

The Intrust Super Cup wrapped up its regular season on Sunday as the final three pending questions for the season were answered.

Going into the weekend the minor premiership, top two finishers and the last spot in the top 6 needed to be finalised, and in the case of the minor premiership it was answered emphatically.

Redcliffe couldn’t be caught if they won on Friday night, and they certainly did that with a huge 74-6 win over the Tweed Seagulls at Dolphin Oval. That left the battle for second spot down to Townsville and Burleigh, and as both sides won the second spot went to Burleigh.

Burleigh’s win meant that sixth placed side heading into the final round – Souths Logan – needed Easts Tigers not to win against Mackay at the same time on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Magpies, Easts won comfortably to snatch the final playoff spot.

Two teams that had already qualified for the finals met in Port Moresby, and thanks to results will meet again in week One of the finals. PNG Hunters took the psychological advantage by winning the first leg 34-4.

In the weekend’s two other games, the Pride continued their fine end of season form with a win in Rockhampton against the Capras, and Ipswich beat Wynnum at BMD Kougari Oval.

FINALS WEEK 1

The QRL announced the details for the first week of the finals, and in an ironic twist to last years, the two home finalists for week 1 are the two sides that were denied a home final in Week 3 last year.

In 2015 Townsville Blackhawks and PNG Hunters finished first and second, but during the finals it was unveiled that the losing side of the 1st v 2nd clash had to play their knockout clash in Brisbane. In the end it was the PNG Hunters who lost and had to play at Wynnum and were subsequently knocked out by eventual premiers Ipswich. This year that uncomfortable situation can’t happen again as SEQ sides Burleigh and Redcliffe topped the table.
